Sliding Scale: Exploring the Powers of Ten
I-Viewer Premium Content Package
A compelling hands-on journey through images at 44 different scales, from quarks at 10 -16 to the edge of the universe at 10 +26. Inspired by both Kees Boeke's "Cosmic View" from 1956 and the 1977 Eames film "Powers of Ten", this interactive allows visitors to zoom between orders of magnitude. Short sidebars offer observations on what can be seen or experienced at each scale, as well as a brief history of the uses of logarithms and explanation of scientific notation.
Suggested for exhibits on: astronomy/space science, physics, nanotechnology, mathematics, or any exhibit where understanding scale, logarithms, orders of magnitude, or scientific notation is important.
Educational support: Website and online materials, teachers' aids, suggested student activities.
